CHAPTER II
We last left our heroes as they were about to get their next assignment.
Walker leaned closer to Brewster to better here what he was about to say. “All right then, your next assignment is to protect the fashion missionary Gracie on her mission for fashion education and improvement for all animals,” said Brewster gravely.
“Gracie!” cried Filbert, “But she’s the biggest snob in the world of fashion!” “I told you it wasn’t going to be easy,” said Brewster. “Why must we protect her? Can’t someone else do it? Why not the police?” asked Walker. “Because, the police don’t know what we know,” said Brewster.
He looked around the Roost to make sure no one was listening, then in a low whisper he said, “We’ve been getting reports that there is a powerful evil force at work. A force bent on destroying people’s fashion sense.” “How diabolical!” squeaked Filbert. “We don’t know where this power is so we are being extra cautious. Gracie is a natural target. So you will protect her.”
Walker looked at Filbert, “What do you say Style Boy?” “I say, even though Gracie is a snob, for the sake of fashion it is our duty to protect her!” said Filbert earnestly. “Very good,” replied Walker, “We’ll leave at once Chief.” Brewster nodded, “Good luck and be careful.”
The two heroes walked out of the Roost, past the still snoozing Blathers, and walked out into the mid-morning sunshine.
“Gracie will be by the town hall,” said Walker. “Alright, let’s go!” said Filbert, with a touch of excitement in his voice. They walked over to the town hall plaza. There was Gracie, she was standing by her car, looking as sarcastic as ever.
“Good morning Gracie!” said Walker cheerfully. Gracie looked at them and said, “Good morning. Is this the fashion disaster club assembled?” Filbert’s blue fur had a pink tinge, “NO! –I mean, uh, we’re fans. Yeah. That’s right! Fans of your wonderful style.”
Gracie looked at them skeptically. “Really?” she asked. “Oh totally!” said Walker, “And we were wondering if we could job shadow you today!” Filbert gave Walker a look that said, you are completely nuts, you know that right?
But Walker stepped on his toe and Filbert snapped out of it, “Oh yeah! We’d love that!” “Job shadowing?” asked Gracie. “You know,” said Walker, “when someone follows you around to learn how to do your job. Job shadowing.” “Oh,” said Gracie, a tad shocked, “Well if you two really want to. I don’t see why not. Who knows, maybe you’ll even learn how to dress without looking like a circus clown.” Filbert’s fur now looked quite red around the edges. “Hooray,” he said through clenched teeth. “Thank you Gracie!” said Walker with false enthusiasm. This is going to be a long day, he thought.
